Just in Time For Saving Lives

We will better educate parents and the surrounding community to gain a better understanding of what it takes to improve the day-to-day lives of families raising children with food allergies. We provide parents with the necessary tools to empower them to create a safe and healthy future for
their children.

Through our non-profit organization we raise funds to support programs for parents caring for children with diagnosed food allergies. This includes but not limited to practical management and day-do-day support. We want families to no longer live in fear and to raise healthy, confident children who will eventually learn to manage their own food allergies as they grow up.

We provide our parents with the necessary tools, allergen safe foods and healthy eating tips, recipes and educational resources at no cost to them. We want to provide our parents with credible, valuable information and access to food allergy medical resources regardless of their
financial means. We would like to thank our donors, grantors and corporate sponsors for making this possible.

We have four major programming areas:

ï‚· Advocacy, Awareness and Education – We cover everything parents need to know from the time of their child’s food allergy diagnosis to preparing their child for managing their own allergies as they become adults. We list our free resources on our website - and we encourage you to sign up for our e-newsletters.

ï‚· Parent Support – We know that managing a child’s life-threatening food allergies can be both scary and isolating. With the help of both face-to-face and online support forums which are managed by parent volunteers, parents actively support one another. We accomplish this through networking, sharing of valuable information, and through our food allergy awareness podcast series. There is also shared recipes which are allergen specific for allergen safe dietary restrictions for healthy eating for all children.

ï‚· Allergen Safe Food and Healthy Eating – We focus on the top eight food allergens; however, we recognize the importance of all diagnosed food allergens, recognized as health concerns. Children with diagnosed food allergies must adhere to strict dietary restrictions which often are limited, especially in making readily available healthy food choices for their child. Which is why part of our mission is for parents who cannot afford or have access to allergen safe and healthy foods for their child to receive them through our non-profit organization.

ï‚· Medical Resources and Financial Resources – We will provide our parents with medical resources which are specific to their child’s diagnosed food allergy needs. These resources are not limited to also providing them with medical devices such as: Epi-pens, Benadryl, allergen free foods, financial assistance for doctor visit co-pay’s, and/or financial assistance for food allergy related overnight hospital stays, allergen specific lunch boxes, food allergy identifying medical bracelets, and/or necklaces.

ABOUT JUSTINTIME

Dr. Naomi Pereira-Lane recently published her research as it relates and aligns with her non-profit organization. Dr. Naomi’s research study and topic is as follows: Parental Perceptions in Caring For Preschoolers with Diagnosed Food allergies. Not only is Dr. Naomi qualified in running her non-profit, she has personal experience with this very topic, as Dr. Naomi has a child living with Food Allergies. Dr. Naomi is sharing a brief excerpt from her research study in form of her abstract.

ABSTRACT

In this qualitative study, a narrative inquiry approach (i.e., a methodology that uses stories to convey information) was utilized to describe the parental perceptions and experiences in caring for children with diagnosed food allergies, while also uncovering the hidden internal and external parental stressors. My study posed one primary research question: What were parental perceptions in caring for preschoolers with diagnosed food allergies? The secondary research questions were: What were some internal stressors associated with this care? What were some external stressors encountered?

To capture the responses of these research questions, parents of preschoolers with diagnosed food allergies were interviewed to uncover if they shared similarities in their parental perceptions as well as their internal and external stressors. These parents were selected as participants through purposive sampling. Specifically, these 12 participants were selected because their children shared the following characteristics: (a) preschoolers aged three to five, (b) a food allergy (FA) diagnosed by a pediatric allergist, (c) a physical clinical reaction in response to ingestion of a food allergen (such as hives, respiratory symptoms, and gastrointestinal symptoms). These participants gave their insights into this phenomenon through sharing their story during a 45-minute interview. Utilizing a semi-structured interview guide, which used 12 open-ended questions, I focused on parental perceptions, internal stressors, and external stressors. Four of Galinsky’s (1987), six life-cycle stages (i.e., Image-making, Nurturing, Authority, and Interpretive) were used in this research study as a theoretical framework. For data analysis, I followed In Vivo coding processes set forth by Saldana (2016).

Three common themes emerged from the findings: (a) lack of medical resources, (b) lack of support groups, and (c) lack of initial medical information on FA. In the discussion section, the limitations of the study, three propositions, recommendations, implications for practice, and future research were discussed.

JUST IN TIME PODCAST

The podcast series will be based on providing educational materials geared towards parents.  The podcast series will highlight, showcase, and discuss the top-eight food allergens.  The podcast will allow me to develop a platform for listeners to choose from a series of pre-recorded sessions.  There will also be opportunities for participants to be part of live phone sessions.  My podcast series will be unique because it will allow parents who care for children diagnosed with food allergies to add their voice by telling their stories through lived experiences.  Additionally, I will also develop short educational videos about food allergies, which will be family friendly and interactive.
